The general consensus on this forum regarding Evanston has been that the south/west portions are less desirable. However, I found an interesting area in the south/west close to Howard, right along the yellow line train tracks, with nice looking homes in the 300-500k range, some higher. A part of this area is apparently the "Oakton Historical District" with very pretty (and expensive!) homes.

Any opinions about this area? I suppose one answer will be "don't generalize" in regards to the "south/east = bad" opinion, but I have not heard much if at all about this area, it seems nice and more affordable than the more desirable north/east Evanston.

There are some desirable home in the "Skevanston" area that are convenient to the Skokie swift. The trade-off is poor access to the amenities of downtown Evanston. It is safe and generally quite "family oriented" with some of the same kinds of activities that folks associate with more modern subdivisions ...
