We are moving to Naperville in just a few days and my son will be starting elementary school (fifth grade) there, after having gone to the same school for K-4th. We are also new to the area, moving from North Alabama. I'm wondering, with just a few weeks before the start of the new school year, a good way to get him involved within the community. The school has said that they will have a night for new students about one week before school starts. We don't know anyone in the area and are a little anxious about his making friends. He has played a little hockey here so we plan to put him in that (though I'm sure it's more competitive in Illinois)....any advice? Also, how is parent volunteerism with the schools viewed at this age? I would love to get involved!

Which elementary?

The parent volunteerism is alive and well...even at the junior high level. There is even a program specifically for Dad volunteers at our grade school.

As far as getting involved, the park district is a great start. There are still some summer programs that start in mid summer. There is also the Y....which has a lot of great programs and two main facilities in Naperville.

Don't have much to add about the hockey issue.

Welcome to the neighborhood!

Yeah, totally volunteer at school, they will love you for it. School starts in a month or so, so you will be moving in and I am betting a neighbor or two will stop over and say hi. Ask if there are other kids in the hood.

My daughter, going into 5th, always tells me about the new people in class every year. She always makes it a point to meet them and talk to them. I'm betting he will adapt great.

Ditto on this. My daughter is also going into 5th grade and they make it a point to introduce the new kids and get them integrated. My daughter loves meeting the new ones.

Thank you so much! We are actually driving up today! Can't wait to get settled in! How does the Park District work? I've heard a lot about it!

Hockey is pretty popular in the area and there are teams at numerous skill levels so I am sure your son will be fine. There are a few rinks to consider from based on where you will be living.

North, west and central Naperville
all seasons ice rinks

Central, south and east
Ice Skating | Hockey | Figure Skating | Ice Rink

South and east
Canlan Ice Sports Romeoville - Home

Of course some people really like one program over another and make the drive regardless of convenience.
