I would also check Inverness. There's a home at 42 Cumnock Road, over an acre, Fremd High School listed at $549,900. There were others, but this one caught my eye.

I can't link it from where I am.

I think this is it:
412 Cumnock Rd, Inverness, IL 60067 is For Sale | Zillow

Looks like a really nice house with a HUGE lot. The only thing is that it has well water and a septic sewer. Some people don't mind this, while others do mind it.

They said they want good schools. Yes, West Chicago does feed into St. Charles, but I think the only two others WC feeds into that aren't WC High School itself is STC and U46 (to my knowledge). The WC part that does feed into STC is pretty indistinguishable from STC itself.

If they want good schools, plus a non-awful commute to O'Hare, West Chicago is not the way to go. Winfield, Warrenville, Batavia, Barrington, etc. might be the way to go for them. Warrenville/Winfield especially might be the best "bang for your buck" wise, especially since large parts of Warrenville are unincorporated anyway. Next up would be Batavia, and then Barrington, etc.
West Chicago schools aren't bad, they're ok, but the far distance away from O'hare makes it not worth looking into imo.

That compares well with travel to Barrington, especially when you consider how much cash you save for about 6 miles and maybe 11 minutes --

That's still a pretty long commute imo. Even the commute from Barrington isn't necessarily ideal, but it's doable.

Considering they want the acreage, I think Barrington would be their best bet.

Community High School -- Chicago Tribune 2014 Illinois School Report Cards

Additionally, it looks like the WC schools are just below "okay" as the state average is a little over 20 for the ACT. Considering what the OP wants, good schools + acreage, I think Barrington would fit the bill pretty well.

I think I found the perfect home! It is in the La Grange school district and it's only a 25 minute commute to O'hare. It's a modern home that's HUGE! It also has a pretty nice lot too.

The only Metra line with good OHare access is the NCS. Long grove is close to Buffalo Grove, which always has parking. Note I wound not consider the NW line, which requires transfer to Pace bus in Des Plaines as having good OHare access.

I don't think they care about being near the train to get to O'Hare...
