This was an electric railroad than ran from Chicago to Milwaukee.

You can walk or bike a lot of the right-of-way today.

It went right through my old neighborhood in Chicago, and even shared tracks and stations with the "L" for part of it's route, I believe.

Yep, this was supposedly a legendary train line (an interurban).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicag...aukee_Railroad

According to Wikipedia, it was abandoned in 1963. The Edens Expressway pretty much cemented its demise. I believe the Skokie Swift (CTA Yellow Line) utilizes former North Shore Line tracks.

Today, the closest thing you'll get to the North Shore Line is either Amtrak's Hiawatha train from Chicago to Milwaukee or Metra's Union Pacific North line from Chicago to Kenosha (WI). The South Shore Line is a similar "interurban" type train that goes the other direction from Chicago to South Bend, Indiana. Possibly the last of its kind in America.

The Metra line is literally the closest thing to the old North Shore since they paralleled each other. The old "Shore Line" is now the Green Bay Trail.

This is historical information easy to look up. Yes it used the L up to the City limits. Originally it ran through the lakeshore communities. In the 1920's the Skokie Valley route was built, mostly along Rte 41. There was also a branch to Mundelein. The shore line route was abandoned first, the Skokie Valley eight years later. The CTA converted the part up to Dempster Street to the Skokie Swift. The C&NW bought the road north of there, sealing its fate. Remember the C&NW was running a profitable commuter service at the time.

The latest chapter in the saga was written when service on the Yellow line (formerly Skokie Swift, and even earlier, part of the North Shore) resumed after months.
