A little bit of bragging but nice to see my town make the list below published last week. Chicago suburbs well represented:

They have the wrong Highland Park on there. I'm suprised there's only 3 Chicago suburbs on there and that Deerfield comes before Hinsdale. We do have a lot of great suburbs and a portion of them should be on the list.

And then there's lists that don't have these cities. I take these lists with a grain of salt. One recent list purposely excluded Winnetka and Hinsdale because they were too affluent, oh brother.

Any suburb that is safe, has good schools, transportation, and infrastructure, will be a great place to live.

All of these lists are based on a set of criteria developed by the authors. In this case, they limited the candidates to suburbs with a population between 5,000 and 100,000 - which excludes very small and very large suburbs like Winfield, Aurora, and Naperville no matter how well they might score on the other criteria. Also, it's a list restricted to 50 suburbs; we don't know which suburbs might have shown up in a list of 100, say. A list using a different set of criteria will produce different results. If my criteria for "best place to live" differ from the author's, a list will be of limited value to me in evaluating places to live.

It's interesting to look at the number of entries for various states, and to note how many states are missing:

8 entries: CA, OH
7 entries: TX
5 entries: MO
3 entries: WI, IL TN
2 entries: AL, MI, NJ, WA, IN
1 entry: IA, CO. PA

Are you confusing Winfield with Wheaton? Now, if they were compiling a list of the 50 Most Random Suburbs and Winfield wasn't on there, I would be protesting in the streets for sure.

No.

I was giving examples of small and large suburbs excluded by virtue of their size. The line should have read for clarity: "...excludes very small suburbs like Winfield, and very large suburbs like Aurora, and Naperville..."

I'm surprised to see Deerfield on this list. Hinsdale, Winnetka and the majority of the other towns all seem to have unique, defining characteristics. "It" factor. Hinsdale's vibrant and historic core, Winnetka's lakefront, etc. Deerfield is just kind of, Deerfield. Decent schools, safe, and a nice place to live, but extraordinarily ordinary. IMO, of course.
