Is it possible at all to get 4 bedrooms, 3 bath in an updated home for less than $500,000 in Buffalo Grove? That is where we would like to live due to the school system and Jewish population but I am not finding what I want in a house. We are coming from the south and I presently live in 4200 sf with 4 bedrooms and 4 baths with granite, tile, slate, hardwood, etc. Our money does not go very far in Buffalo Grove. Add a salary decrease to move to Illinois and we are not happy campers.

Any neigborhoods that will give me more bang for my buck? We need children in the neighborhood and don't want to move too soon. How does housing compare in Arlington Heights? Is the school system there almost as good as Stevenson?

Not all of BG feeds into the huge district 125, Stevensen. Other areas including, but not limited to Long Grove and parts of Hawthorn Woods.

You can find a 4 bedroom in your price range and updating is in the eye of the beholder. # full baths may be a problem. Many people own serious fixer uppers to be in the school district.

Arlington Hts. feeds into 4 different school districts, Buffalo Grove, Prospect, Rolling Meadows and Wheeling. None, have the reputation that is held by Stevensen.

Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, Northbrook and Skokie are among some of the suburbs with a significant Jewish population.

Good luck to you.

As the previous poster said, finding 3 full baths is unlikely, but finding 4 bed/2.5 baths should be very easy. You should understand though that the majority of houses in BG in the Stevenson district were built between the '70s-'90s and haven't been updated because people don't have to there to sell their home - just being in the Stevenson district makes it desirable enough. I would look in the Highland Grove neighborhood (bordered by Weiland Rd on the east, Pauline Ave on the south, Rt 83 and Buffalo Grove Rd on the west, and Deerfield Pkwy on the north). There are a lot of remodelings and even a teardown or two in that neighborhood so I would guess houses are more likely to be updated on the inside. For the same reasons also look at Strathmore (bordered by Rt 83 on the west and north, Arlington Heights Rd on the west, and Checker Dr on the south), although I don't think it's as nice of a neighborhood as Highland Grove. There are tons of families in any neighborhood in Buffalo Grove; you don't have to worry about that.

Thanks Ahava, that is exactly the information I am seeking. Neighborhood names make it easier to search. We are moving a long distance and can't visit too many times. I just can't do too much of a fixer upper because there won't be extra $$ for a while.

You're welcome. Most of the houses for sale aren't fixer-uppers, they just have the original '70s/'80s decor. If you can live with that you can find a great house for under $500k and not having to settle for schools that aren't top-notch makes it worth it, in my opinion.
