What are you talking about? From the very moment this story was reported, the media put out even a general description of the guy (black, 5-9, 230-260 lbs, wearing black). The description you just cut and paste has been out there since Sunday morning, on every local station and newspaper. But, thank God you gave us the description again and defeated that PC media trying to hide this man's race!

I'm sure if those women knew the creep's intention was to kill them, they would have fought back. Normally in a robbery situation, one would assume the perpetrator is out to tie up his victims, steal what he can, and get out of there without killing anyone. They probably thought their best chance of survival was to comply and allow him to tie them up. Just speculation on my part.

Usually they do actually and it is under directive from the Chicago Police Department.

Is that why they hide the race sometimes? I was actually wondering why this was sometimes the case. I just found it very interesting that sometimes they would say the perp was 6' with light hair and never mention skin color.

In all seriousness - is it for reasons of not telling the public for reasons related to the investigation, or what is the reasoning behind that?

The South Loop is really quite safe for a city neighborhood, I can't imagine being uncomfortable there. And why would you live in the neighborhood if you don't feel comfortable there, and your wife can't go out shopping by herself?

I do not think it has anything to do with an investigation usually. It has all to do with racial/ethnic sensitivities and that is the raw truth unfortunately.

And maybe I should clarify - I do feel very comfortable just hanging out in my neighborhood - I love it here - but sometimes in store parking lots at night, I see people that make me watch what is going on around me - same on the L at night and taking buses at night.

I've lived in the South Loop for 8 years (and 5 years in Lakeview prior to that) and while it is safe, it is the city. If you are anywhere in Lakeview, Lincoln Park, South Loop, etc and leave a garage door open for more than 10-15 minutes unattended - odds are you will be robbed - I have seen it many, many times. Women shouldn't walk alone at night in any of those areas - not a problem, just a reality.

Where ever you are, it's also likely that within a few blocks, there are projects - which, unfortunately usually brings a higher likelihood of crime to the neighborhood. They just caught a guy from the Ickes Homes on State trying to steal copper gutters off the POLICE STATION on 18th and State -in the middle of the afternoon.

And, as in all areas of the city, there is a higher risk of crime than most burbs - and at night, it is not always safe for women to be out alone - just a fact, but really not an issue for us or anyone I know.

That being said, we are moving to the SW Burbs in the next couple months - but safety has nothing to do with it - we will be back in the South Loop once the kids are out of the house. We need more space, better public schools and a location closer to free babysitters (i.e. in-laws).

In order to avoid unfairly damning a whole ethnic group with a particular, as a rule the police department and the media print details about a person's race when it is pertinent to the crime, e.g. when there is a claim the crime was a racial incident or the suspect is unknown and the police are trying to determine his or her identity, or when a dangerous suspect is at large harming people. I am surprised this thread involved any racial issues.

My biggest regret is that I am personally familiar with one of the women killed. I have known her mother for more than 25 years.

However, my next regret in this situation is the threat of funeral picketing by those nuts from Kansas who follow Rev. Phelps. It seems that since this store had a 'plus size' clientele, the church believes the store also sold to transgender individuals. For some reason, that is enough of a connection for the anti-homosexual folks to picket a funeral of someone who bought at the store.

What are the odds Reverend Phelps prefers jelly over syrup? If that POS has any of his congregation picket any of those funerals it will get ugly.
