I read this very sad news from Europe in a larger forum.

Larcia Hawkins was suppended for showing "human solidarity."

The college took issue with her statement that Christians and Muslims follow the same god, a contention that is opposed to a written statement Larycia signed off on when she began teaching there. The hajib was a harmless act of solidarity, and certainly there's been no opposition from the college about that.

Wheaton College is a big proponent of immigrant and refugee rights, and is closely aligned with advocacy groups fighting on behalf of current Muslim refugees. I hope the spin on this current story doesn't result in a defunding of the charities currently working to resettle refugees in the Chicago area.

This is a better informed report:

That makes it better? They are suspending (and further investigating) a tenured professor because of her beliefs? Are people not allowed to disagree with anything dictated by leadership at a religious college? As a college professor myself, this is upsetting at best (though I would be more likely to use stronger language).

No, not better. I said better informed, as in more informed, as in more informational.

This was in reference to your earlier comments, when you said that you hoped the media "spin" wouldn't affect things. I hope it will affect a lot of things; namely, people notice when a college or university suspends a (tenured) professor simply for what he/she believes.

Wait are people really surprised a religious school with a statement of faith requiring signature by staff and student would actually uphold said statement? Seems like they want professors who are confessed Christians. Not really shocking IMO. You may disagree but it's internally consistent.

Except she is taking this action as part of her Christian beliefs.
