Hello -- We're moving from Jacksonville, FL to Chicago. I commute every week and so I need to be with in 20-30 min vicinity of the airport. My wife is still looking for a job, but we'd like to find a place in the suburbs from which it is easier to commute.

I'm thinking of Schaumburg, Arlington heights. Can the experts recommend any other areas along with these? Also can you please let me know any really good apartment communities or townhome communities? I'm OK to pay upto 1400-1500 for a good 2b/2b home.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The travel times from most any town with any desirable residential developments to O'Hare will likely exceed 20 minutes -- even getting from on office park in DesPlaines or Rosemont that is adjaacent to O'Hare can take 20 minutes. A 3o minute radius during peak rush hour won't extend very far either... Chicago O'Hare International Airport to Schaumburg, IL - Google Maps

It will likely be difficult to find a anything other than an apartment or condo in your price range.

The single thing to understand about this airport is that there is a plane landing or taking off every 10 seconds 24/7/365. There will always be traffic around it, that is compounded and compromised during rush hour. If you work there pray for odd hours.

O'Hare has lots of flight but not one every 10 seconds -- O'Hare International Airport - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are multitude of reasons why traffic around O'Hare is not speedy, perhaps the top reason is the congestion that comes from the fact that all traffic to the airport is funneled in from a single major stretch of highway that also link Chicago to the suburbs. The junction of the Kennedy and the Northwest Tollways is transected by the Tri-State tollway which serves as a major conduit around Chicago.

The overall ability for people in the region to deal with commuting issues including air travel is really not too bad so long as they have realistic ideas of what is appropriate travel time. Many people that rely on air travel as part of their employment choose to live somewhere that is reasonably convenient to both O'Hare and Midway becuase the options that gives them. Towns from Lagrange through Oak Brook and Elmhurst would all fit well with those parameters. Towns further west / north tend to be more focused on just O'Hare. One can certainly get to/from a large number of towns that are well within an hour of O'Hare but the last 15 minutes or so of the trip closest to O'Hare are likely to be most traffic clogged.

These are very nice apartments in a very safe area: Luxury Apartments for Rent in Northbrook, Chicago
Usually 20-30 minutes to O'Hare since you are close to 294 and Willow Rd. You can also take the back roads when 294 is bumper to bumper and make it to O'Hare in 30 minutes.

Anything along 294 within 10 miles north or south should fit the bill. Elmhurst, Park Ridge, western Glenview, parts of Des Plaines. Heck I work in Lombard and make it to Niles which is past Ohare in 30 min routinely via 88 and 294.

There are some nice areas of Park Ridge and Des plaines not far from the Cumberland, or Rosemont Blue line Station.

Let's not forget about suburbs on the North Central service, which stops at OHare (the #2 destination on that line, after downtown). Prospect Heights, Wheeling, Buffalo Grove...
