That's the issue with Evanston... There's no great east-west artery that gets you to the Edens or points west. It's well connected to the city, but not to other suburbs.

I work in EGV & made MANY trips to Evanston Hospital (wife on bedrest while pregnant). It's basically route 83 to Golf and then al the way east. At rush hour from EGV to Evanston Hospital it was exactly one hour (this was in the summer months). Can't comment on morning commute from Evanston to EGV but sure others may pipe in.

I love Evanston, especially when employment is downtown Chicago. The East/West thing is a real drag and then some. Arlington Hts. probably comes the closet in terms of an easy commute to EGV and having town ambiance beyond the strip malls and indoor malls. Mount Prospect follows.

I agree that Arlington Heights & Mount Prospect are great bets in terms of having charm, and a short commute to Elk Grove Village. I'd probably follow that list up with western Glenview (bit on the pricier side), and maybe Des Plaines.
