I'm relocating to work in Schaumberg/Woodfield area, thinking about finding a home in Algonquin area. How long should I expect to commute? Any other suggestions of places to live in the area? (family of 5, looking for smaller town feel, country feel, etc.)

It depends on the time of day you will be traveling from Algonquin to Schaumburg. If you take 90 Eastbound from Randall Road to 53 the quickest will be about 15 minutes but can range up to an 45 minutes during rush hour. You are looking at probably 40 minutes to 60 minutes each way when there isn't any rain or accidents. Currently 90 is under construction which is scheduled to be finished by the end of 2016. Another lane is being added from Randall Road all the way to 294 in each direction so that should help with some of the traffic. There are also additional entrances and exists that will help get you to the Woodfield area.

Definitely depends on where in Algonquin, but I definitely don't think it would be 45 minutes to an hour. I commuted on 90 for several months from the east side of Elgin to the north side of Chicago and THAT whole trip was usually just over an hour to an hour-15. From the Route 25 on ramp to Woodfield was generally about 10 - 20 minutes. (This was just last summer, so construction was a factor.) I know it would take longer from Algonquin, but probably not that much. Check travel times on Waze.com during the times you'd actually be commuting.

It isn't a bad drive. It shouldn't take more than 35 to 45 minutes most days. IL Route 62/Algonquin Road is the most direct route. You could also take Route 25 to Route 72/Higgins Road (to Golf Road/IL-58). Both ways have stretches of a 55 mph speed limit and a lot of it is 45 mph...most of it is a nice country drive.

Like clock work from the west side of Elgin to 53 is 30 minutes for me at 5:00 in the AM pre rush hour. 10 minutes to get onto 90 at Randall, and I'm pulling onto 53 Northbound at the 30 minute mark. It can very easily be 45 to 60 minutes depending on the time of day.

I used to work in Schaumburg and had a friend/coworker who lived in Algonquin. Easily 45 minutes - count on it taking longer depending on weather/construction. She HATED the commute.

That commute would be brutal. If you want bang for your buck yet be closer to Schaumburg, I would suggest looking at Hoffman Estates, Schaumburg, Roselle, Bloomingdale, Elk Grove Village, or Rolling Meadows.

What's your budget and how big of a house do you need?

I'd estimate about a 30-40 minute commute to Schaumburg from Algonquin. The commute would definitely be do-able. I do want to note, that Algonquin is most definitely not a 'country' feel though; very suburban for sure.

You will probably have a harder time finding the country feel than a 3,000 sq ft house in any of the towns listed by 4122 above.
