I am myself am moving to Mount Prospect shortly. Just closed end of June. I bought a large home in good school district for under $350k. You can certainly find somethign in MP under $300, even close to $200.

Best bang for the buck in the metro area can be found in NW Indiana. Many residents have discovered this from the IL side and are moving over. Munster is located right off the interstate and there many other nice communities like St. John that will make your piggy bank grow from all the savings! Yes, there is an old stigma for the area but once you discover these communities like others have you won't feel this way. You could post in the NW Indiana forum for more info.

Yes, NWI is not that much different. The major difference is an overall lower cost of living. There will be a expansion of the south rail system in the near future that will take commuters through Munster and points more south. Then the whole "Region" as it is called by the rest of the state will likely have much higher growth. Many upscale homes are already there as are more and more upscale shopping.

And FYI, its not as far as many people think though it might be for your friends. Munster to the loop is only 30 miles!

NWI is directly adjacent to many former and present day heavy industry sites. It does offer a lower COL though.

True but you wouldn't know or feel that in the rest of the NWI suburbs. In Whiting , Gary, East Chicago and most of Hammond yes but the far majority of the NWI suburbs you wouldn't know it. That is an old stereotype that will keep some from moving to NWI
