OK-I am 59 and looking to move back to Chicago. i lived in St. charles before I left and can't afford the taxes in Kane County.

I am looking to spend $250,000-$300,000 on a townhouse or small SF home. Am i being unrealistic? i work from home so don't have to sorry about commute time. I would like to be near expressway as I have friends in the city, NW burbs and western burbs.

Trying to figure out if I can do this-maybe i need to look at the outer burbs?

I have 7-10 more years to work and then will look to probably move out of stat for retirement.

suggestions, comments? Looking to any and all feedback.

I think Des Plaines still has reasonable taxes.

What industry do you work in, where are you hoping to find a job, and what do you consider reasonable? There are plenty of neighborhoods on the NW side of the city where you can find a SFH for under $300,000 and have a fairly low tax bill. Would you keep the property if you ultimately decided to move out of state or would you sell?

Surprisingly, Hinsdale has pretty low taxes and some nice townhome/condos in your range. Btw, we're likely moving back to St. Charles.

Naperville isn't bad either.

If you want to be near the expressway, look at Batavia. It's about as affordable as St Charles, but it's close to the expressway wheread St charles is not

The city of Chicago even with the new property taxes going into effect, still has fairly low property taxes. A neighborhood like Jefferson Park or Edison Park on the NW side will be close to the Blue Line and Kennedy Expressway. Looks like the Median sale price is about 300k.
