Just floating an idea. I live in East Wilmette and there are loads of underground tanks that people have "forgotten" about. Some of these have held Kerosene. Do you suppose that you have one of these on your property or a neighbor does. It fills with water then drains slowly to your perimeter pipe and to your sump pump. Your sumo pump then drains to the sewer which explains the gasoline film in the sewer.

Just thinking outside the box here. My Dad has a friend in the sewer business and he has always said that he's never surprised what he finds in North Shore yards.

It sounds like it is, thankfully, resolved now but if it continues to happen this might be a possibility.

Definitely a possibility, I had raised the question very early in the thread.

OTOH though, her sump pump *should* be going to a storm drain and not to the sewers. Hypothetically

Yes, so the water can go out to her yard and then back to her perimeter pipe over and over. Instead of going away. I understand the code reference though.
