Hello,

I am a single male that will be starting a new job on March 20 in the suburb of North Chicago in Lake County. My salary will be 78K, and I am relocating from Smyrna, GA (suburban Atlanta). I like Evanston, IL but the train ride will be at least 45 minutes to my job located at the Great Lakes Naval Base in the suburb of North Chicago. I don't mind the longer commute via rail. However, if there are nice suburbs closer to the Great Lakes Naval base that would be nice. Can anyone recommend nice areas (close to transit with affordable rents) for a single guy working at the Great Lakes Nave Base in North Chicago? Thanks, I would greatly appreciate the advice.

I'm afraid the only young single appropriate suburb on the UP-N is Evanston. Wilmette is more family, many of the suburbs north of that are high affluent type suburbs. 45 minutes isn't too bad of a commute for the Chicago area.

Thanks! I am leaning towards Evanston. From the literature and videos I've reviewed, Evanston seems like a nice place to live.

I agree.

I would start there.

Evanston would be a good place. You will have to drive but it might not be so bad.

Not necessarily. There is a Metra station right next to the Great Lakes Naval Base. And three stations in Evanston.

Yes indeed. Evanston is probably the best fit for you. My take on commute is - a train commute always allows you to do other things like do something on your phone or read a book or just take a nap. I don't see it like driving a car at all. And the Metra is quite reliable and comfortable.
