Hello,

I am planning ahead to when I buy my own single family home and want a rough idea of utility costs. I'm always working on my current budget, as well as planning for the future. I would be living by myself in a small to mid-size home. I'm not sure of the exact style, as it would be whatever is priced right, but I'd be talking 1950s or newer, and likely ranging from a ranch to a fairly modest Cape Cod or split level.

Electric
I have a lot of game systems that I play sometimes, but I'm not in the habit of leaving TVs or lights on when they're not being used. I have a desktop computer that is usually in sleep mode, and a few devices that I charge. The main draws would be electronic devices, a refrigerator, microwave, washer and dryer, and central air. I would prefer to keep the temperature in the low 70s while at home in the warmer weather.

Natural Gas
I would likely have a gas range, but I would only be cooking for myself for the most part, for what it's worth. As far as heating in the cold months, I'd like to have the temperature in a comfortable, low 70s range. As far as the water heater, I shower once daily.

Water
Again, I shower once daily, and there would likely be only me flushing the toilet and washing my hands, and only me doing laundry and dishes for myself. I'm not one to water the lawn or wash my car at home, and I doubt I'd have a pool.

Bonus - Internet/TV
I'd absolutely have to have decent high-speed internet. I've seen some prices like $39.99/month with Comcast. Whether I have TV would honestly depend on my budget. I wouldn't need a billion channels or anything. I know this is something I could more easily research myself, but I'm just curious what kind of deals are out there for high-speed internet/TV and if you're satisfied with what you have. Note: Like many people today when they move, I couldn't care less about a landline, unless it were included in a great package.

I think that should about cover it. Currently, I just contribute certain amounts of money, but don't pay for specific, individual utilities, and our bills wouldn't be the same as for a single person anyway. I know how much my car costs in gas, insurance, repairs/maintenance, etc., and it's also easy to calculate things like food or toiletries. I can figure out a mortgage by looking at the market, interest rates, property tax, etc., but utilities are something that's harder to pin down. Any input would be very appreciated!

It really depends on a lot of factors. How well is the house insulated? What exposure does it have? How new/efficient is the furnace/hot water heater? What temperature are you planning on keeping the house at?

How much can you afford per month for utilities and PITI?

I realize there are quite a few factors that go into this, and a precise answer isn't feasible without a specific house in mind. I did however specify some things about utility usage in my details, and more than anything, I'm just looking for "ballpark" answers given one individual in a smaller single family home in Chicagoland. Temperature would be pretty "comfortable" all seasons, low 70s, although I could change it while out at work (given I'd be the only one in the house) or at night.

Electric - average $80/ month.
Gas - average $40/ month.
Comcast - whatever low rate they advertise + at least $15/ month in fees/
Water - BIG variable. In Downers Grove, the base cost before any use is about $50/ month.

This is about the best I could ask for as far as a general answer. Very helpful and much appreciated.

Of course, this will vary quite a bit. Don't forget trash pickup if it's not included.
