Especially using the last parameter, I don't think this exists near Chicago.

Would a condo make more sense perhaps?

Have you considered Northeast Wisconsin or even southwest Michigan? You could definitely find something in Kenosha Wisconsin. Illinois is not affordable, not only with higher prices, but with the second highest property taxes in the nation. I Agree that Berwynn is a good option. I don't know anything about South Holland, but I would avoid Blue Island, Lansing, and Calumet city. I drove through Lansing A few months ago and I saw bullets on the ground.

I know states will try to implement certain laws based on their values, but perhaps that concern is moot at this point?
So I moved to NWI a few years ago (Munster) and I feel that my local community is much more open-minded than Pence's particular views. While I am not LGBTQ myself, I have made several friends here who are (unrelated to each other). I have not heard them complain about tons of intolerance in the local community (but some will exist most everywhere). Rather, like you, they really have a bone to pick with Pence and THAT is completely understandable. I guess my point is there are more progressive communities in NWI and there are people who are working on these issues locally to provide a counterbalance to Pence.

Hi OP, we lived in Illinois our entire lives and moved to NW Indiana last year. I have Great friends that are gay, so I understand your point! Moving to Indiana was more about a financial decision for us.

With that said, all of those communities you stated are not worth living in. MAYBE Lansing, but even that town is in serious decline as other have already mentioned! I would also recommend a condo! Crestwood is a nice town near Oak Lawn and you can get a 2 bedroom condo for under $100k, plus they give tax rebates on your property taxes! Another good option would be Oak Forest!
