I had dinner with my bike club last summer and sitting next to me was a guy who was attempted bike jacked on Lake st riding through the hood. Hoodrats hiding behind the L supports knocked him down while riding, weren't able to get him unclipped from his bike pedals and eventually just left him in the street with a broken collar bone and bruises. I'd get a conceal and carry.

I know many people do it, but I don't think biking to/from Chicago and Oak Park is a great idea. There's really not a good way to go. All routes are either fairly busy/congested, or there is no dedicated bike lane, or there is glass, potholes abd garbage in the bike lane. Also, I have heard too many assault stories similar to the above that it's just not worth risking. And, I really want to be able to ride my bike to work.

That said, I also know people who have been riding this route for awhile and they have had no first-hand experience with crime.

One of my dad's friends does it ever day and has never had any problems. He goes along Lake St, which passes squarely through a lot of sketchy areas - but does it with a few friends, so that helps.

I live in Oak Park and I've been downtown with my bike for job interviews a few times. I've usually gotten home by biking on Fullerton or North Ave.

Agree it is a bit risky. A family member was doing it - riding East on Madison, and someone tried to knock him down. Opened a door in a parked door just as he was riding past.... aggressively.... He swerved around it. Then they chased him a bit. It was a miracle he didn't get hit by traffic as he swerved away from the door.
