Can anyone tell me about the Churchill Condos in Glen Ellyn?

I'd like to know whether they were built well, whether they are managed and serviced well, and anything else anyone can tell me about this complex and whether it would be a good place for a woman to live in retirement.

And can anyone comment for me on whether Glen Ellyn, on the whole, is a good place for retirees? The other towns at the top of my list (for proximity to family) are Geneva, St. Charles, Wheaton, and Batavia.

Ideally, I'd like to find a single-level house or condo for $250K or less from which I can walk to a coffee shop, a few restaurants, a grocery store, a drugstore, a gym, and a library. I'll also be looking for volunteer opportunities.

The Good Templar Park area in Geneva might fit the bill, but I haven't found anything I like in my price range there, yet.

The Churchill Condos don't meet all of my criteria, but downtown Glen Ellyn is very nice and has Lake Ellyn, access to the Prairie Path, and would be a quick train ride into Chicago - other things I'd really like.

Comments, anyone?

Thanks.

Pensilva -- I have been keeping Glen Ellyn on our radar for several years, as a possible spot to relocate to, if we choose to move back to the Chicago western suburbs. Hubby and I have some relatives and friends close by. The Churchill is a building I like, too. Love the location, the fact that it has a parking garage, and is built of brick. We were looking for a condo with "central heat and air" with the individual controls, so it passes that test too. Only draw-back is the lack of in-unit laundry, but there are some benefits to a shared laundry -- it is a place where you can socialize a bit with your neighbors. I have been looking at the real estate ads and notice there was just a drop in the price of the 2-bedroom for sale there. Great healthcare and hospital options in the area, too. For us, the property taxes are a bit over what we would like to pay, so that would stop us! A major issue has recently come up for us, though, so a move is likely not going to happen now.

I love the location, too, and it is indeed a nice downtown. Until recently, there was a small family-owned grocery-store located right downtown. In fact, I think it was the oldest operating business in Du Page County. But, alas, it has closed and I am not sure about a drug-store - I do not recall seeing one there. There is a Pace bus which an elderly person could take to a grocery store, and of course, METRA trains are nice for going downtown. The parks are wonderful and Du Page County Forest Preserves are great, too. Lots of churches within walking distance too, and a nice library.

That being said, from what I know, it is a nice building to keep on your radar. But I have never been inside, or known anyone who has ever lived there. Good luck and Happy Retirement!

Many thanks, Hollyhock Garden!

Nice to hear that you like the Churchill (at least from considering it online, as I have been).

I noticed the unit with the price drop and the lack of an in-unit laundry, too. Re the laundry, I've been living in an apartment with a shared laundry for the past 10 years and have come to like the rhythm of doing all three or four of my loads of laundry at once, every two weeks, so that's fine with me.

I hadn't thought of the Pace bus - that's good to keep in the back of my mind for when I can no longer drive - or when I want to be more eco-conscious.

Thanks for responding to my inquiry and for your good wishes.

I hope your issue gets resolved very soon and very smoothly!

Best
Pensilva

There are plenty of stores and shops in the Glen Ellyn area. The grocery stores are all on Roosevelt Road though now, where there is a Jewel, and Trader Joe's. A Pete's Fresh Market is going in. More stores and shops in neighboring Wheaton. Plenty of drugstores, there is a Walgreens and a CVS on Roosevelt Road with additional ones in Wheaton.

There is a Whole Foods in Wheaton, a short drive away and also a Fresh Market on Roosevelt with kind of gourmet type foods.

I will definitely be spending some time at the Whole Foods. I hope that store stocks the branzino fish I like to sautee with oregano, garlic, olive oil, and lemon in the Greek style....

Thanks again, Toria!
