hi i'm sorry i'm posting in this forum about wisconsin, it's just that no one has responded to me yet in the wisconsin forum and i'm getting impatient. I know kenosha is technically part of the chicago-land area, but i'm not sure how kindly you will take to me posting about another state in here.

Anyway, me and my mother are visiting chicago in july and we'd like to know what there is to do in kenosha. i've heard it's nice, and pretty close to chicago (like and hour and a half?) we want to explore not only in chicago, but also the suburbs as well as part of wisconsin. thanks.

Kenosha is not really a hotbed of activity for a visitor from out of town - you're better off spending more time in Chicago or checking out a more unique Wisconsin town (i.e. Madison for a quintessential college town or Lake Geneva for a summer resort town). If you're a jelly bean fan, though, there's the Jelly Belly factory tour that's in the town right next to Kenosha. They give you free samples at the end, which made the trip more than worth it for me.

Kenosha has a Museum on the lake front (downtown area). To the best of my knowledge there is no admission fee, although it's been a while since I've visited. The Museum is based mostly on Kenosha's history. On one of the upper floors there is an art gallery where paintings, drawings and other artwork are for sale by local artists. The lake front marina is also right there with paths for walkers and bikers (just go a little bit south of the Museum for the most scenic walk).

Kenosha also has a new Civil War Museum that is about to open soon.

Milwaukee Zoo is a fantastic place to visit! Much better than the Zoo's in Chicago.

Kenosha is still working on getting their Casino, but Milwaukee has one.

One poster mentioned Wisconsin's Lake Geneva, a really nice place to visit. It's only about 20 or 30 min. drive west of Kenosha, straight out highway 50. They have a downtown area loaded with unique little shops. There are also guided boat tours on the lake (do a google search on Lake Geneva for things to do).

Have fun!

Default things to do in Kenosha

Kenosha is a great city to put on your 'to visit' list.

The first thing that comes to mind is our beautiful lake front and beaches. I believe I read that about 80 percent of our lake/beach area is open to the public.

We have many different museums in the area of the lakefront to visit. The Civil War Museum is very near being completed. We have the history museum, also our main museum which is still very new and has a beautiful view of the lake. Not far is the dinosaur Museum. We also have several Art museums and galleries to choose from also.

You can hop the trolley that tours around the museum area, or walk the stores in the downtown area. Many new coffee shops have opened up in the area too.

We have miles of bike trails all around the city. Nice walking paths by the lake. Way to many parks to list them all. Some are very nice to picnic in. Lincoln Park has a beautiful flower garden, especially in the Fall. Great place for picture taking. The park district keeps up the parks very nicely. Baseball fields, soccer fields, new covered picnic areas too.

Rhodes Live theater is located close to the downtown area. The Historic Homes close to the lake are awesome to view. The Durkee Mansion is beautiful during the Christmas Season with a tour of the rooms all decorated.

We have several large craft fairs in the summer months. Farmer markets in many of the parks with a large market by the lake on Saturdays that also offers live music, and crafts as well.

Yes, we have a dog track, and of course the Jelly Belly is close by also.

If you are hungry there is many fast food, casual dining, pizza houses, and up scale places to choose from. For a bit of history you must try Franks Diner and ask for a garbage plate. Good and greasy but a fun place to check out. Villa D Carols is always a place of beauty. Even if you don't feel like a full meal but want a nice place for romance, Villa's is a beautiful place just to order a good pizza. The Boat House is a popular night spot to eat at that over looks the lake.

All through out the summer events are planned. Bike races, great parade, fireworks, tall ships have been here several times, free outdoor concerts in several areas of Kenosha each week. Very nice band shelter near the lake.

We have an uptown, downtown, mid town, many different shopping plazas, and a ton of outlet stores out by the Hwy 94/ hwy 165.

Beautiful Lighthouses to visit with one that gives tours several different times. Car shows each week at several different locations.

Whew...I haven't even touched on the flower festival, or fishing areas, the 2 large public swimming pools, the best places to fly kites, or the kite show in the early summer. The bike races each week. A few miles south from Kenosha you can find a great Drive In Movies.

You can't leave without going to THE SPOT for a great hamburger and root beer served by car hops for over 50 years at the same location.

The Brat Stop has great bands if you want night life. Plenty of other places also to go to through out the city.

Bowling? Several places to choose from. Golf? Again, several very nice choices to go. Action Territory is a family favorite with bumper cars, mini golf, and a ton more fun things to do.

This city has several Thrift Shops to choose from, antique shops, bike shops, fishing stores, and so many things I can't remember now and so many things I may not even know to do yet.

If you can't find it in Kenosha, the surrounding areas have so much going on too. Racine has festivals down by the lake and through out the city each month too.

If you go South right across the border into Illinois you also have Gurnee Mills, and Great America.

I am sure if a little online tourist information you can find many different things to do while visiting Kenosha and the areas close by.

Have fun!

Kenosha, Are you sure your not with the Chamber of commerce or something? Really, Kenosha has some tolerable areas to visit but lets be honest..... If you want nice parks or Beaches your better off checking out Wilmette harbor or the Botanical Garden. Street Fairs and Culture would be Evanston. I personally wouldn't make a trip up to Kenosha for culture or cuisine (You can find Culvers in the burbs for a taste of Wisconsin).

I don't want to sound mean but one of my favorite activities when in Kenosha is for my son and I to count how many men AND women are wearing green packers outfits. (Dressing in Packers garb is a Wisconsin thing).....
