Elmhurst is a great choice, depending on what's available. May also consider Glen Ellyn or Wheaton, who each have really nice little downtowns and train access to Chicago. These are slightly farther from Itasca compared to Elmhurst, but not by too much. Lots of people commute from there to Chicago, but it would be longer than from Elmhurst.

Oak Park is overrated IMHO and would be a rougher commute to Itasca for sure.

I am from Bloomingdale, which borders Itasca. It's a decent town but doesn't have a walkable downtown. We used to go to Glen Ellyn for that.

Addison, Villa Park, Wood Dale, Bensenville have more of a working class vibe, than a "we have a cute business district" vibe. Elk Grove is close to Itasca and a nice area, but not as much of a "downtown".

Mount Prospect might be another option. 9 miles from Itasca and closer to Chicago. Also, a very nice downtown area.

FWIW, I lived in Oak Park and worked in Itasca for a while; I took the Metra from Galewood and brought my bike on the train to cover the last mile or so to my office. It's definitely doable if you have reason enough to live in OP - but I still think actually living in the near NW suburbs like Elmhurst or Bensenville or Itasca is the OP's best bet.

Agree! Mount Prospect is another good option. Maybe Park Ridge as a 3rd option, but Elmhurst and Mount Prospect are slightly more manageable for a commute to Itasca.

Definitely check out Elmhurst! The downtown is great and so is the metra service. Your $3k budget won't be an issue at all. This building is pretty new (less than 4 years old) and has several floorplans in your budget:

There's another brand new building going up across from the train station, too. It's still under construction, but looks to be quite nice when it's done:
