My fiancee and I are getting married in March. We met in college. He grew up in Joliet, whereas I am from Pittsburgh so I know less about the area. I currently live in the city while he lives with his family in the Joliet area. (We do not want to live in Joliet).

I am not sure where we should live once we get marred. I work at the Aon Center. His office is technically in Naperville, but he also travels around to various forest preserves around the Chicago suburb area for work. But being at least 45 minutes within his office would be good.

I know i can handle a slightly longer commute on the Metra because I don't mind sitting and reading. Right now living in Lake View East, my commute can get extremely long sitting on the bus on Lake Shore, and I don't mind. I definitely need to be near a Metra station, though.

Will he be driving to various Forest preserves all around Cook and Dupage County? If so, living in Naperville doesn't help him much. It's hard to pick any suburb and say "this is the closest one to the forest preserves," because they're all over.

My 2 cents worth -- you may want to consider some towns along either the BNSF line (perhaps Downers Grove, Lisle, Westmont), or the UP-West line (Lombard, Glen Ellyn, Villa Park come to mind). These are reasonably centrally located in the region with good expressway access for him, reasonable driving distances to Naperville, and would have not-awful Metra commutes for you.

What's the longest door to door commute you can tolerate?

Also, as others have stated, the forest preserves for your fiancee affects things. Is it the whole area, just DuPage County, etc?

Check out LaGrange - it has a couple of Metra stations (BNSF line) and a vibrant downtown with shops & dining. Brookfield to the east of it is also on the upswing if you’re looking for something a bit more affordable and is also connected to the Metra.

Also, this is really dependent on your price range.

Oak Park. It splits the difference and adds more public trans options to Aon/downtown as needed. 45 min commute to work for her via metra/bus and 45 min to Naperville via car. Approximately.

Plus, for a young married couple Oak Park is arguably more interesting.

Yeah, Oak Park would be a good fit. La Grange/La Grange Park would also be a consideration.

Palatine, Arlington Heights, Prospect Heights - all along the Metra rail

IMHO always prefer the north side
