Does anyone here know anything about crime in Joliet,Illinois? Is it a high crime area? Does it have quiet parts and other parts that aren't so quiet?

Joliet is pretty spread out so yes there are better parts than others. Drive around and you'll get a good idea.

Joliet had a bad reputation as a high-crime area for decades. But it's been gentrifying slightly in the last 10 years. The downtown is getting revamped, new businesses are opening, and more people are visiting. Downtown Naperville siphons off much of the party crowd, though.

Joliet still has a long way to go; it's no Wicker Park. Its outer suburban location won't attract the hipster crowd, even though the old buildings and remnants of its long history as a port town are every hipster's wet dream. Its main hope are Millennials aging out of city life and business investors.

The Chicagoland Speedway (racing circuit) and Autobahn Country Club are there or just outside the corporate limits. The area around there and the Ikea distribution center are pretty rural.

I've never been, but I do have a friend who is originally from Joliet. She always referred to it as the ghetto. No idea how serious she was, but she never moved back after college and that was nearly 20 years ago.

Joliet's a big town. There's plenty of safe areas. The subdivisions in the west/northwest section around Rt. 59 in particular is completely indistinguishable from Plainfield and Shorewood for the most part.

There are other areas that are simply more middle class and pretty indistinguishable from suburbs that built out from the 1950s-1980s that are also pretty safe.

Stay away from these clowns and you'll be fine.

Seriously though, most of Joliet is safe.

Yes, Joliet has more crime than Naperville- to be fair, most cities around that size do.

My understanding, high crime is most prevalent on the city's east side, including an area locally known as "The Hill"- the intersection of Fairmont Ave & Juniper to Rosalind St., looking at it from google streetview you'll see a public housing complex. But since the 1990s, when violent crime hit a peak, the city has managed to curve a lot of the crime. The population has doubled since the 90s, which I think only helped its image. At a population of 148,000 covering 62 sq. miles, it's a large suburban city, so there are bound to be safe areas. Generally speaking, the west side of town is considered to be the more desirable area.
