Hello, I have lived in chicago for ten years where it is your right to sublet an apartment. I am thinking of moving to suburbs due to covid to get away. I saw three apartments today in the NW suburbs and I asked each if you are allowed to sublease an apartment if for some reason you need to move and I recieved three different answers.

one stated you can not sublease in the suburbs, one stated you can sublet with a 1000 dollar fee, and another said you can sublease your apartment with no issues.

Who sets sublease policy in the suburbs does it change from city to city or is it a state law?

Thank you.

Chicago tenants have an absolute right to sublet while suburban tenants do not. In the suburbs, subletting will depend upon your lease agreement. There are no laws making subletting illegal in the suburbs, and Illinois law does not address the approval process for sublets.
