Batavia/Geneva/STC would have been a better bet. Or a smaller home in Campton Hills. A second tier of Elburn / Sugar Grove perhaps.
Not all of Elgin is U46 school district. On the fringes of elgin you move into other districts, some very good is my understanding.

As the other person said, it's not always about the taxes. If you have a job in Aurora/Naperville, Elburn/Sugar Grove is much closer than Schererville or Pleasant Prairie. And it's sometimes messy living and working in two different states. That said, that is also an option and another geographic advantage of the Chicago area; it's a massive metro/CSA that spans 3 different states, and you can live in those other states and still commute to IL.

Exactly right. Our home in a new community in Elgin is not in U46. It is our understanding that the schools are quite good in our area of Elgin. The most important factor for us was finding a single-story home with a 2 or 3 car garage that was brand new or newer with finishes we like. Not to knock 2-story homes and older homes - some of them are very nice - but for us, we do not want to be going up and down stairs or spending a lot on repairing older items or updating finishes on an older home (we've been there, done that and don't want to do it this time).

I'm aware of the other districts. Burlington Central is marginally better - not sure how it fares compared to Kaneland these days, they are fairly similar I would think.
