Immigrant family moving to North Shore (Chicago, Evanston: schools, college, suburbs)

My family and I are moving to the North Shore. We like the east/central side of Wilmette because of location and schools. As an immigrant family, we are wondering if we might find other families like ours or if we might stand out in the area. We are moving from a college town where our kids are used to having many friends with immigrant parents as well. I’m curious to see what people think. Thanks!

Chicagoland has one of the largest immigrant populations of any metro in the country outside of NY, Califorina, and Texas/Florida. So you will find plenty of immigrant families, especially in the North Shore suburbs from all over (Latin America, Asia, South Asia, Eastern Europe, etc.). Chicagoland (Chicago and its suburbs) is one of the most diverse metros in the country.

Agree. There was an influx of Eastern Europeans after the collapse of the Soviet Union. We also have a lot of Hispanic immigrants.

Some North Shore communities like Wilmette and Evanston have populations that are comprised of a higher foreign-born population than the national composition, albeit not much higher. However, many also have populations that are comprised of a higher native-born population than the national composition like Winnetka and Glencoe. Wilmette has a visible population of people born in East Asia. However, given the North Shore's affluence, many of those that are foreign-born were born in other Western countries and Europe.
