Another huge factor is one we both complain about a lot, taxes; as it costs roughly 40K/annually to lock and feed only one inmate. This expenditure is almost all wasted, as it's the same offenders entering the system over and over.

The solution, at least in part; is an overhaul of our correctional system in order to reduce recidivism rates.
Yes, lock them up; but we need to get smarter on rehabilitation/how this money is being allocated.
As 90% of all convicted felons will one day return to society.
All of that is much easier said than done. Things in this country have already gone way too far in the wrong direction where the conversation is overloaded with alleged police brutality, racial inequalities in criminal justice, and general apologetics for criminality. There is too little talk about all of the victims of crime, people whose numbers greatly outstrip the poor gangbangers who ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time and ended up a social media cause célèbre.

Good morning,

Our past Sheriff, David Clark, was popular with some people, and unpopular with others, for some of his comments.

One of those: Telling citizens NOT to JUST depend on law enforcement to protect them. (Meaning, take control of the situation, however possible). This could be in the forms of applying for Carry Conceal, Making sure to call authorities when you witness crimes taking place, playing the Good Samaritan role to help others out, etc.

Personally, I agree with this. NO GOOD PERSON should be a victim. DO what you need to do to protect yourself. And learn self-defense! This is why I am an instructor. This is one way I try to give back to the community (both to help citizens try to feel safer AND to offer programs to youth to help DETER them form possibly BECOMING criminals!).

Take care of yourselves, everyone. And HAPPY FATHER'S DAY, to all you good fathers!!

This.

And also, get serious about reducing out of wedlock births. Even left wing researchers at think tanks like the Brookings Instituation admit children who grow up in 2 parent families do better in life. It would also help with income and wealth inequality:

...a wealth of research strongly suggests that marriage is good for children. Those who live with their biological parents do better in school and are less likely to get pregnant or arrested. They have lower rates of suicide, achieve higher levels of education and earn more as adults. Meanwhile, children who spend time in single-parent families are more likely to misbehave, get sick, drop out of high school and be unemployed....

.... Unless the media, parents and other influential leaders celebrate marriage as the best environment for raising children, the new trend—bringing up baby alone—may be irreversible.

The northern suburbs already are separate municipalities with their own police departments.

The Village of Golf used to contract with the County for police. Long Grove still does. And there are occasional pieces of land that were never incorporated and thus rely on whatever County Sheriff.
