Can someone tell me about good neighborhoods and good schools in Chicago or burbs? I grew up in Chicago on the south side past 95th and Dan Ryan. My ex husband grew up in Skokie. We moved from Chicago 18 yrs ago when we got married. I don’t really know if I want to purchase a home as of yet because I am relocating for a job and everything is moving fairly quick. I know I don’t want to be on the West or South Side. One question is do I need to be in the burbs pretty much trying to avoid as much violence as possible? What’s a good burb to be in? I am worried about racism all though when I was in Chicago I never saw any. I am Puerto Rican, Dominican, African American, and my ex husband is European and we both were raised in Chicago and decided to move away to start a family. Even though we are not together we want to find the best neighborhood or burb possible for our 14, and 10 yr old. I am trying to avoid placing my children in private school. We live in Eagan MN now about 60k people in the city and the area is very nice low crime there are other interracial children in the schools never any problems with racism that I know of. As far as crime you have some hoodlums in town but they are not anything like what’s going on in Minneapolis. The public schools in Eagan are the best in the state. I am very low key, being able to get to public trans is a perk in MN you have to drive everywhere. With really no other options. I am looking for good advice.

Where is the job?

What sort of commute do you want?

What can you afford rent or buy?

Default Hey

my job will be downtown or rosemont. I would really love to be able to ride public transportation.. I don't want to buy right now just incase I relocate after a yr to huntington beach CA. My limit for rent would be anything under 3200. I want to experience the city a bit, before I decide rather or not to buy. do u know how transportation is from rosemont area?

The Blue line to Rosemont is a decent way to get to River Rd, but until recently the VAST majority of commuters into Rosemont have been drivers. The sidewalks are not laid out well for walking even a little bit and the bus service is noticeably less useful than within the Chicago city limits -- I suspect Don Stevens cut a deal so as to ward off low-income types...

$3200 is first class luxury rental territory -- you could rub elbows with Oprah!

Park Ridge Is very nice. Kids go to Maine South which is a great high school and the town is more residential and a good to raise kids in. Race is not a problem here neither is violence.

Actually, living in Rosemont itself may not be bad. It feeds into a great high school (Maine South) but a better option would be Park Ridge.
Rosemont is in Leyden Community District 212 (http://www.rosemont.com/village.html - broken link), and its residents do not attend Maine South.

My bad, I changed it now but I guess the person I had heard it from was wrong. I know I'm right about Park Ridge though.

I will start chking that out you guys have been helpful. I don't want to spend 3000 + on renting but having a great school is important. Along with a safe neighborhood...
