I recently got a job in the loop, so I've been looking for a nice suburb to move to with my three kids (10 year old girl, 14 & 12 year old boys). The most important things I'm looking for are good schools (whether private or public), access to public transportation into the city, and activities for the kids. One of my sons plays travel hockey, so that's important. The other plays rec baseball. And my daughter is really into ballet. Those three things are pretty important as well. I'm looking at around 500k for a house. Thanks!

Default Lots of options...

If you can take Metra there are lots of options. Towns that a few years ago might have been out of reach price wise have some very nice inventory.

Elmhurst is on the UP-W line, as are Glen Ellyn and Wheaton. On the BNSF there are nice options from Naperville all the way though Riverside.

NW towns like Park Ridge, Mt Prospect, Arlington Heights, Barrington, Northbrook, Deerfield, Buffalo Grove, Glenview, Evanston, Wilmette and maybe even Lake Bluff and Highland Park all have some nice options right around $500k...

It really depends on what you want -- farther out than the towns I have mentioned and you tend to be outside the comfortable daily commute range, but you could get a new larger home.

Thanks for the advice! My husband and I are going to look around at some of the neighborhoods later this month, so I'm just looking for some starting points.

Look into Barrington and Arlington Heights. They meet/exceed all of your requirements.

Is Arlington Heights the home of Arlington the horse race track? I spent so much time there as a kid. Wow, brings back some memories.

Yep, Arlington Park is located in the southern portion of Arlington Heights.

How are the parks and such in all these burbs? It looks like for my price a yard is something I'll have to sacrifice, so are the parks good?
