Hello,

I'm in the early stages of researching Chicago as a potential city to relocate to from Pittsburgh. My main reason for relocation is a job in the financial district (the Loop?).

I am looking for recommendations for an affordable suburb that has train access, and is within an hour of the financial district. Initially I will rent ($1,000/mo) and then hopefully buy ($200,000 or under).

I appreciate any input at all!

Thanks!
Nina

Berwyn might be a good fit for you, much less than a hour. Depending upon the block address (1000 State St.) you may need to grab a cab from the station to work if it is too far to walk, or if the weather is too ugly. Rent for a year. At the end of the lease you will have a much better idea of where you want to buy.

There are a 1000 neighborhoods. The block where you live more relevant to safety than the name of the 'hood or suburb. You may fall in love with Berwyn or find your dream home in another area. There are too many choices to make in too many places to be in too big of a hurry to own. You are moving into an area of 10M people, 6000 restaurants, and as many choices.

Not really sure what your other requirements are with your move.

The SouthWest suburbs has a nice balance.

Proximity to the city and Metra serves most of the Villages and Cities.

I strongly recommend that you start looking at what suburbs you want to live in as commuting to the Loop everyday can be a real PITA. Do realize that there are some good neighborhoods in Chicago.

Your numbers are a little low for a great close to the city suburb.

As much as you can get a lot of great advice on this forum, one person's "safe and comfortable" area is another person's ghetto.

Have you been to the ChicagoLand area?

Were there any particular areas you liked?

I see that you mentioned Plainfield,
one downside to Plainfield is there are no commuter trains running thru the village.

I do not know what the schools are like there but they have to be good because the area was booming
pre recession.

If I were a single person with kids I would look into a closer community to the city if that is where you are going to work.

Commuting from the loop to Plainfield is going to take a large portion of your free time.

Look at Homewood it will be affordable the crime rate is low , its safe , good schools. quicker time to the loop than plainfield. commuter train right in the village.

above all contact a professional realtor

Over 100 suburbs to choose from. Need more criteria to give specific recommendations.

I think that the number of suburbs was counted once here and it amounted to be over 300.

But yes, more specific criteria will help us be able to suggest a better suburb. If not we could list a whole lot of suburbs.

How big of a house are you looking for and do you or will you have kids?
