Hi there,

I just graduated from Northwestern University. Secured a job with a fast moving biotech. Problem, finding a place to live. While at NU, I was a nerd, worked in lab - didn't do anything else. Now I have to find a place to live.

The company will be established in West Chicago ; I have no preference as to where I live. But I do not want a long commute time. I was wondering, if I lived in say... Naperville; how long would it take me to get to West Chicago or Downtown Chicago for that matter via my car?

Also, are there any safe neighborhoods around West Chicago that i should look into as alternatives to Naperville?

If you could help, I'd apprecaite it!

Ali

Greetings from a fellow NU alum!
Commuting from Naperville to West Chicago shouldn't be too bad, depending on where in Naperville you live. You should also look at Wheaton, a very safe area though it can be expensive. I've heard good things about Geneva as well. As for going downtown, I-88 is always a mess so I'd suggest taking Metra. I believe they have two stops in Naperville.

Try the towns of St. Charles/Batavia or Geneva.

Thanks for your response! And it's wonderful to hear from an NU Alum, I just graduated from McCormick with my masters. Anyway, fun fun. I was wondering - even in the worst traffic, how long would it take from Wheaton to West Chicago? Or West loop?

Thanks for your response, I appreciate it!!!!

West Chicago has many great neighborhoods, most of them lie north of Washington St. Homes are older, but decently priced. Alot of the town is Hispanic, with lots of authentic restaurants and shops (and illegals too of course). Are you looking to rent or buy? How much are you willing to spend? Traffic in WC isnt bad at all at any time, which is quite nice. Schools are a bit lacking though, but are rumored to be going through improvements, and in the 90s actually captured some kind of award from the state, although I forget which award it was. There are some nice neighborhoods up north on Rt. 59 close to Rt. 64 (North Ave). I think they go for 3-400K but are pretty nice. There are also new subdivisions along Rt. 64 near Sunny Acres pumpkin farm that are in the 2-300K range and some a little more expensive. If you need more help just let me know.

You're very welcome. I graduated, well, years ago with a BA in English/secondary ed. Wheaton to West Chicago I don't think would take more than 20 mins. Wheaton to downtown could take an hour, easily. My brother lives in Wheaton and he always takes the Metra to go downtown. It's a somewhat long train ride but much less stressful than driving.

Um, you do realize that West Chicago is a suburb on the Du Page/Kane County border, nowhere near the city of Chicago, and that it is not the west side of Chicago? From the way your question was worded, I thought I would point it out, just in case. My apologies if you already know this.
