Alicia,

Northbrook is a nice community with a small downtown area near Shermer Rd. Some of the homes are a bit older and may be a little less than what you're looking for, but it sounds like you're seeing some that please you. The downtown is not as large or impressive as some of the other suburbs though.

I do like Glenview and would suggest you look around there. There are several older homes along with a large new development with many new homes. Glenview has a downtown area, and the new development also has lots of shopping and things to do. It is expensive by Chicago area standards, but other than that, it's very nice.

Other options to look at in that area would be Deerfield and Riverwoods/Lincolnshire. I would probably recommend those over Northbrook, though they're all nice communities. Those are all very nice areas with great public schools. Deerfield has both middle and high priced homes, and Riverwoods and Lincolnshire tend toward upscale houses on large lots. Deerfield has an impressive downtown area. Riverwoods and Lincolnshire don't really have downtown areas, but Lincolnshire has a new entertainment/shopping center called CityPark. The homes in Lincolnshire and Riverwoods are on large wooded lots that are very nice.

Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions.

Default rental

sorry no suggestions but I am curious to know if you have already rented out your home in Claremont. My family and I need to sell our home and downsize for a bit. We have lived in Claremont for almost 8 years and dont want to move.

thanks

I have visited Claremont a few times. The north shore can be too insular as well as keeping up with the Joneses -- same for Hinsdale -- though Hinsdale is closer to your husbands office. You may want to check out LaGrange which has a walkable downtown with Metra train station, good schools and family orientation. Glenview may work as well.
