How is the car commute from chicago downtown to elmhurst, Il? I'm planning to work in eEmhurst and rent downtown chicago. Is that crazy or doable?

It's doable, but depending where you are I'd say it's about a 45 minute trip out there and about an hour coming home every day (if you're working normal hours). The Eisenhower is a bear during rush hour. If you could metra it, do it.

I second that, the commute via metra is a breeze and you whizz by all those cars sitting in traffic-rain shine or snow.

Downers Grove is by far the most affordable of the three. It is a mostly middle-to upper middle class area and has low property taxes. Median home value there is about $300,000.

Naperville and Elmhurst have both very high house values. I'd recommend Downers Grove though. Reasonably affordable and you get three fully-served Metra stations, ridiculously low crime rates, and great schools.
