Evanston Township High School and OPRF have had climbing black enrollments as well, even though the demographics of those towns have been relatively stable. Why is this? Two reasons: Black residents are having more kids than white residents, and white residents are more likely to send their kids to private schools.

HF needs to get their website in order (i.e., present consistent info). This paragraph is pulled from their "About our school" page.

[SIZE=2]"These days the commitment to excellence continues. Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School received state nomination in the U.S. Department of Education's Blue Ribbon Schools Program in 1994-95. The school was also nominated for recognition in the Department of Education's Drug-Free School Recognition Program, becoming the only high school in Illinois to be nominated as both a Blue Ribbon and a Drug-Free School."

3 time award winner is indeed impressive.

Might a 3rd reason be that black students from neighboring areas are sneaking in to get a better education? I recall a thread about this happening in Oak Park (from Austin), but to what degree I don't know.

What a sorry commentary on our educational system when kids have to lie about where they live just to get an adequate education.

Default Drover

Would you want kids from Austin sneaking into Oak Park/River Forest High School if you had kids attending there and you lived in Oak Park or River Forest? I think not.

My guess is you would do all you could as a concerned parent first and taxpayer second to have those not living in the district and mooching off your tax dollars and driving your school down sent back to their crappy schools in Austin.

It is sad kids have to lie about where they live to get a decent education but few of us are willing to welcome kids from other districts who might drag down our schools and put our kids at risk.

My mom isn't looking to spend more than 350k.
Matteson seems to get more house for your money, but I have no clue about the schools

I don't want my brothers and sisters getting in a bad school district. They're all young (9, 7, 7and almost 1 yr). Not that it should really matter, but they're black.

Back in Maryland, my brothers and sister weren't the only black people in class, but at the same time they weren't the majority. That's what I was hoping to find somewhere in the South Suburbs/NWI. I didn't think it would be so hard though . I just don't want it to be a sort of culture shock for them.

Also, the Homewood/Flossmoor HS seems to be a lot similar to Merrillville HS in terms of demographic change.

Matteson...LOL. I'd stay away from that town. the only reason they are growing is because their west side borders Frankfort which has great schools, low crime rates, and good family people. Matteson isn't very nice, especially the east side by park forest and the north side by the Auto Mall.

Matteson Elementary looks to be OK- the rest do not score well... With 350K to spend- you could look farther west at a smaller house in Tinley. Great schools there... If you are looking in Flossmoor- try to get in a house that feeds into Western Elementary. I really don't know much about NW Indiana schools.

I am not going to lie, Matteson is OK compared to other suburbs like chicago heights but i certainly would not raise my kids there. i would rather rent in orland park than own in matteson.
