I'm a single guy, getting ready to come to chicago for work. I've never been to chicago. I have a 7 year old boy who is with me full time and I'm interested in finding out what areas on the outskirts of chicago would be good for schools. Is there bus trasportation for public schools, how much does it cost a year? The site is in Niles, and I would be looking for living in that general area. What kind of child care providers are there in the area, what kind of living is there, is it a safe area. Or, could anyone suggest a good place to be. My son is my world, and moving would be a huge change for him. I want him to be comfortable with the move. Does anyone have suggestions on whta would make the move easier? You can email me @ scott1couch@gmail.com with your comments. Thank you! Serious comments only please! I need all the help I can get

I would at least come to visit before deciding to move here. You owe that to your child. If you have to ask if the the area is safe and your bringing a child along with you, your really putting the cart before the horse.

Affordability will be more of an issue than safety (its very safe if you live in the suburbs). There is plenty of child care options (again can be very expensive) and good news-----the bus to school is free.

Good luck to you and your son!

If you are going to live here, other nearby options besides Niles are Skokie, Morton Grove, and Lincolnwood. They are all safe communities. I lived in Skokie for ten years and I liked it, its very diverse and not as expensive as some of the other communities. A wide array of housing stock and shopping and easy to get into the city. I sent my son to the Children's Care and Development Center in Lincolnwood, IL and it was wonderful. That was back in the late 1980's but I would check it out. It was an easy drive down Crawford from Skokie to drop him off there.
