Visiting Chicago/Suburbs (Peru, Olympia Fields: restaurants, moving to, metra)

I am moving to the Olympia Fields area in June.....

I will be visiting for several days in March to see what I've gotten myself into. Since I've never been to Chicago, anyone have any suggestions on things that are "MUSTS" for anyone moving to the city?

Any top restaurants?

Any activities?

Any places to visit to get a real feel for the city?

If you like junk food, eating at a Portillo's is a must. Pure Chicago institution, heart-attack style.

For more serious restaurant recommendations... do you have any culinary preferences? We have it all here from world-class steak to 3-inch-thick pizza to Italian to Japanese to Thai to French to Indian to Peruvian to Timbuktuian.... (I made that last one up, but it wouldn't surprise me to learn it's true.)

The city has so much to do that it's really what you make of it. So it may help to narrow down activities recommendations if you told us what some of your interests are.

since your moving to Olympia Fields, get familiar with the Metra Electric Line. It's your lifeline into downtown. there's a funky cool restaurant in the south loop a few blocks from the Electric Line Roosevelt Rd Station. It's called the Chicago Firehouse and is in a turn of the century Firehouse (odly enough)
address is 1401 s Michigan.
