I am taking a Sr class of 25 to Chicago in March. Getting bids from HotelPlanner but need to know which areas to avoid as I'd like to be able to be within safe walking distance of something ... Trying to center around medieval times, blue man group (n halsted), tommy guns garage (s wabash) and navy pier. How are Irving and Franklin Park areas?

Franklin Park is a suburb outside of the city. Nothing wrong with it, but you don't want to stay there. For this type of trip and group, look for a hotel in the area bounded by the lake on the east, Chicago Ave. on the north, Jackson on the south and Franklin or LaSalle on the west (a few blocks outside these areas is fine as well, with the exception of the lake). There's probably 100 hotels within these boundaries and you'll be sure to find something good. (FYI, Medieval Times is way out in the suburbs--you may want to rethink this).

There are plenty of hotels in the loop that will be within easy walking distance of Navy Pier. I agree, you will need a bus to get to Medieval Times.

Id find something closer to Schaumburg where there is tons of shopping/eating around, close to the highways for access to everything, close to Medievel Times, and very safe.

If you want to stay in Chicago try the Holiday Inn at the Merchandise Mart. Within walking distance of stuff and also near buses. I would think it would have reasonable rates.

I would not recommend Franklin Park, and Schaumberg/Medieval Times is far away from Downtown Chicago. Why not go to some museums instead?

OK...you've got a few far flung locations so you have plenty of options. And it's not like the kids will be outside by themselves anyway, so you hardly have to be in a place that is "walkable".

Fairly close to Medievel Times in Rolling Meadows (Algonquin Road, due east of 53) is a Holiday Inn with a Holidome (large swimming complex). This hotel does a big business with groups of kids and will definitely keep them entertained when they have to be inside and (most importantly) not allowed to go out.

Keep in mind that what you will probably save in a suburban hotel will exceed the cost of gas to go into the city and back on the bus.

The only place that the OP mentioned that the group is going to in the burbs is Medieval Times. Why in the world would they want to stay far away from downtown Chicago when most of the places they are going to are around downtown Chicago?

Good question, Avengerfire. I think the poster needs to decide: Are they coming to see Chicago and all it has to offer, or are they going to Medieval Times and the land of shopping malls/suburbia?

It would be much easier to plan a trip around one or the other. As a parent, I'd have a lot of questions about a trip going to MT and Schaumberg having any educational value.

I guess its possible to do a Chicago trip and stay in Chicago and rent buses to go to MT but I think it would be pricey.

I'd agree with missing Medevial Times unless you have an overwhelming agreement from the kids to go there; there is way too much downtown to miss. Besides the kids don't want to say they went to Schaumburg...they want to say they went to Chicago!

I think it is important to know if the group will be flying here as well as how many days they will be here and where they are coming from.

Also will they have a couple of vans or a bus at their disposal?
