I am similar. My grandfather was born in 1886, Bohemian, and grew up in Cicero after moving from Chicago. His parents emigrated from Slovakia and he had 5 brothers and sisters. His daughter was my mom. I was born in 1942, and the rest is history. So do you still eat dumplings and sauerkraut????

No sauerquart for me, dumplings yes, but my favorites are the Kolaches and Susenkys.
Proud to be half "Bohunk and half "Mick".....my mother was 100% Irish.

I eat dumplings and sauerkraut and roast pork to this day. But what are Susenkys? Never heard of them.

Me either?? My high school boyfriend made fun of me because we went "hobie hunting" for mushrooms. My grandmother made "spit pie" out of Concord Grapes and pie dough, but she left all the seeds in. We also had peach and plum dumplings too. Yum.

The Susenkys were a layered fruit filled Bar type cookie......
The center layer was apricot, strawberry or peach, covered with crumbly type of pastry topping and dusted with powdered sugar.
The last time we had a Christmas time get together (many aunts brought cookies), with the Bohemian side of the family was in the mid 1940s............still have great memories of those "sweets".
