In a way its a self-selecting mechanism. Those who get it and can afford it move to the NS, those who don't stay away. Everyone is happy.

I had 1.5 Million to spend 5 years ago, but spent less on the Glen, and now my house is worth less than I paid. But that house in Kenilworth my wife liked has appreciated. So did that one in Wilmette. Thats just not fair!!

People on the NS must be snobs, because I said so --Wah! The Glen is better than the NS because ....uh...powerlines....yeah and .....our schools are almost as good, so they must really be better becasue that makes them snobs....yeah."

BTW - another difference between the areas. Most Winnetka/Kenilworth types would know to put this in "Chicago Suburbs" instead of "Illinois". I'm not saying its our superior test scores, but you never know (humor intended).
Great Post Anthera, (again) And I think the Glen is "anywhere USA" zzzzzzzzzzzz

You simple paupers may live where you choose , but I prefer Winnetka, where my driveway is paved with gold, and my toilet is 24k as well.

Glenview is nice, but you can't really compare it to the north shore. Sorry to burst your bubble.

The "Circles" neighborhood in Glenview is very NS-like. Lovely homes, mature landscaping, SIDEWALKS, very established neighborhood surrounding the grounds of a country club. But the "Glen"? No.

I don't understand why anyone with money would buy a hopped up drywall steroid palace on a Glenview cul-de-sac when they could buy a beautiful house with character in a real neighborhood along the lake. Some people have no taste.

Are home prices on the North Shore inflated? Sure. But it is definitely the nicest suburban region in Chicagoland.

By the way, 95% of the people working at SOM today would be embarrassed by their firm's involvement in "The Glen".

Steve-o,
You've been asked this but I am going to go ahead and ask. What does your boss do?

All things being equal (ie house price, schools, commute, etc.) I would take the southern NS suburbs over the Glen every time.

The Glen is decent enough. The neighborhood just northeast of the town center is decent from an urban design standpoint, but overall the layout of the Glen is to spread. The wide boulevards and unnecessarily wide parkways put too great a distance between the various neighborhood areas.

Plus, the trees/landscaping is not mature enough and since there are literally dozens of equally quality neighborhoods in many suburbs, I just couldn't justify over an existing mature neighborhood.

But obviously, each to his/her own.
