Yes, even decent law-abiding citizens such as myself might have the urge to smack the wusiness out of this guy.

I knew a guy like this and he ended up being kicked and pistol whipped to within an inch of his life by a bunch of thugs who met a demographic description that most of us would probably classify as urban. In DeKalb no less. I think he lives in Montana now.

If you walk around with a scared look on your face in an urban area, be it on the train or wherever, you're going to have a problem -- probably a big problem. It's just the way of things.

They got the guy I knew across the face with a pistol, kicked him on the way down and again several times while on the ground. The only reason they stopped was because someone came out of the 7-11 where this was all happening and yelled, so they ran. No mercy was shown. I'm sure his timid reaction to the thugs was taken as disrespect, and perhaps hurt their feelings to the point where they felt a beat down was in order. Not that I get any pleasure picturing this happening to this guy but it very easily could.

I say downtown Naperville and pay 80% of that $40k income towards housing. Anything for his personal safety.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe the victim became timid because the thug had a pistol in his hand and he didn't want to get shot? What was he supposed to do in that situation? It sounds like he was damned either way. How about "thugs" stop carrying guns around because anyone who feels the need to carry around a weapon other than a pocket knife is a complete coward in my book.

Liberal? LOL! First time I've been called that in awhile. Anyway, the way I understood the story was that the pistol came out after the beating started, or it kicked it off if you will (pardon the pun). I don't believe the pistol was out when he walked up. They weren't robbing the store. They were just outside, saw him, and made short work of him. I imagine there was some sort of fear manifested prior to the altercation. And, like the animals these thugs were, they sensed that and descended upon him.

Appropriate response? I don't know. All I'm speculating is that his fearful reaction to their presence as an initial matter could have been what made the thugs answer with a thrashing. Not condoning the behavior in any way, just relaying the story.

I agree with your statement 100%. Anyone who carries a gun is an absolute coward, especially when they use the butt end of it on some poor timid white kid who probably fainted before they even laid a finger on him. I have a very low thug tolerance myself and hope these clowns ultimately spent some quality time in prison. The moral of the story for the OP is that if you look scared all the time though, you make yourself a target, so the gentleman will be better off in the most secure area his salary can afford.

I'll say that's a very real possibility. I've had people respond to me like that (showing obvious fear and intimidation just at the sight of me for no reason) when I'm just walking down the street minding my own business. It is really insulting and hurting and does make you feel like giving them a reason for it.
Granted if the guy had a gun to pistol whip someone, he was already potentially up to no good, but if that guy acts paranoid like that when he walks past "scary people", he definitely increases his chances of getting beat up. That's just like walking up to someone and just saying oh my god you're a monster!

Sure. But a gun wielding criminal has no right to react this way. They are monsters, after all.

There’s a job opportunity for me in Hines, IL (about $40,000/year, living on my own). I don’t have any guns and am not planning on getting any. My vision of Chicago is a racially segregated, crime-filled, accidentally glance at a stranger and get shot kind of place. Are there any parts of the Chicago metro where that is unlikely (what are the safe neighborhoods that I can afford)?

Quick answer: Nope! Happy Hunting.

I hope you're joking, and not as completely clueless as your comment. Metro Chicago is no more dangerous than any other large metro area in the U.S.
