If the OP is truly searching for interesting professorial sophisticates, Oak Park is still probably the safest bet. But you can find these people in any upper-middle-class suburb these days. You just have to dig a bit more. Oak Park oozes with these people.

That's pretty harsh- although north Maywood does have a slight bit of charm around Chicago Ave.

Yeah, there are some gorgeous old houses. A few rehabbed ones too.

If you have $500,000 to spare for a house, then I guess you can afford Oak Park! The only drawback are the taxes...But with this market, you can get something for less than $400K and then the money you save can be spent on the taxes.

I would suggests looking within Elmhurst. Around the St. Charles Rd Area. Communting to the City from the burbs is easier than from near the city out to the burbs. If you miss your train it may be an hour before the next going out to the burbs. Towards the city they run espresses and about 15-20 min. apart miss one. You can still possible be on time. Elmhurst is Great because you have the underpass so you don't ever have to be stuck by the a train. The Prarie Path is Wonderful. One of the Most Dog Friendly towns ever. I can go on and on. Just my opinion. I never recommend that both partners work equally distance from the home unless they both are close. A little quirky but, just a personal perference.
