Hi! We are a family of four moving to Skokie area. My husband has a job in Skokie and we are looking for a place to rent for 6 months to a year so that we can get a feel for the area before buying. The most important thing for us now is to find a great elementary school. We don't want to spend more than $2000/month on rent. I am very nervous about moving to the "big city" and I am hoping for some suggestions. Thank you!

Be prepared for a culture shock. Chicagoland is nearing 9 million population. You might Skokie or nearby Park Ridge. The City of Park Ridge, Illinois or Downtown Skokie, Skokie, IL

Many years ago Skokie was a very nice Jewish community and Park Ridge was very upscale. I do not know how much the communities have changed in nearly a half-century. Neither is terribly large. They both have history, culture, and many things for families and children. Both are about midway between the airport and the city. You'll find Whole Foods, Cosco, Trader Joe's and all types of services and shopping nearby. Chicago is a city of conveniences and some of the best food in the world. You can't see it all in two weeks or two months. Relax, and enjoy it. I do not know where you live now, but be prepared for Chicago, cold. It you live in around Skokie ithe lake affect winds may not affect you as much. Take one day at a time and don't try to compare Chicago to where you were.

Chicago is a very unique city in the heartland of the Midwest. Once you leave the City you'll find farms and ranches, corn and beans, and of course cattle. You can also find camping, nature trails, several zoos, parks, etc.. Chicago is just one portion of America's fifth largest state. You will find in your new state there are many choices. It is no farther to Door County, WI than it is to Peoria, Illinois. They are both very historic and cultural and on differnt bodies of water.

You might want to try Des Plaines, Glenview or Mt Prospect that are nearby. I have no clue about schools because I don't have any kids that age, but you can look up school rantings online.
