DearAll, my family will be moving to Chicago in 6 months. We are very well travelled, open minded and want a diverse safe area to live. Excellent schools would be nice but we may also consider chicago lab for our eldest age 12. my husband will be working on north michigan ave. A not too long commute would be good. just want the kids to be in a nice environment where they will not experience hostility. we will rent initially then look took to buy. not sure how much rentals are? any advice?

They both have public transportation
Oak Park has an expressway if you'll be driving to work yourselfs

Hyde Park is honestly one of the better bets if you want to be near the city, and due to it being the POTUS second home, it's status has been raised even moreso than it was.

Right, they asked for area, not necessarily suburb.

Depends upon what qualifies as "middle class" too, but there are "middle income" families Hyde Park that might have household incomes of under $80K at both Lab and the better public schools... Family sized rental in HP are about as pricey as the come in HP, budget might be helpful to know.

Working on NoMi I would not want to live any further south than HP, and needing good schools it would be too hard to guess about what hoops one would have to jump through to get into a selective enrollment situation, though the racial component might work to their advantage in some areas there are only so many slots and I would hate to find out my kids would need to be trekking all the way across a brand new city that is very different than what they've experienced in the UK...
