LITH to Elmhurst would be a bad drive, I'll second that. It is right next to more prestigious Crystal Lake. It does have its own small airport, though.

Good question.
I think it is a desire for new construction and/or looking at big house for less $ and not factoring in property taxes, commuting time & cost and sometimes forgetting to do due diligence researching schools. I contend that it is often cheaper to pay $50-75K more for a home closer in because of cheaper commuting costs and often, cheaper property taxes.
Of course some prefer the new construction on a cornfield "moonscape" look while others, like me, prefer an established neighborhood with many mature trees.
I think people often forget what a drag it is to commute from places like LITH, Crystal Lake to Schaumburg, Rosemont and other job centers in the area. What is the cost financially and personally for commuting 2-3 hours a day instead of 45-60 minutes a day?! Can you ever replace that time or the stress it causes?

Most who drift out towards Algonquin and LITH are looking for more affordable newer construction.

And to be fair to OP, I bicycle through Algonquin frequently. There are some older sub-divisions that are decent and there are some that are really wooded. And the older section of town is pretty. So that area does have some nice spots and the hilly terrrain is kinda cool. BUT as stated in earlier posts, you can find similar in communities that are closer to work.
