Where do technology related people live near Chicago? Basically, where are all the geeks? I want to be able to live next door to geeks or go to the local Starbucks and talk about Twitter, iPhones, or SAP. I know that this is no Silicon Valley or San Francisco. Any ideas?

There's only one Fry's in the area, I would imagine they are somewhere near there.

I'm way out in McHenry and there are some out here, but I've found that we're pretty spread out.

Technology related jobs in Chicago and the whole region are rather different than California tech jobs. Most of firms that employ large tech staffs in this region are involved with "financial services" and "Enterprise Technology" -- quite a bit different than working for a firm that has revenue directly from the sale of tech products.

That said even the firms that fit in the tech category (like Motorola, Orbitz, AT&T, TellLabs) have a culture that is far more "big business" and far less 'entrepreneurial'. While there are undoubtedly some hard core geeks like you might find in Silicon Valley folks like that just are not as dominate and have far fewer outlets / socializing opportunities.

Some say this lack of geek cultural is why firms like DivineInterVentures and other efforts sputtered...

Yes, I myself work in a large IT department for a big company. Just wondering if there are communities/suburbs that have more of these type of people. Aurora? Naperville? Schaumburg? River North downtown? Lincoln Park downtown? Casting a wide net.
