That would definitely be an option! We're just thinking about 1) schools and 2) wanting a neighborhood where we really know our neighbors--a community--and 3) which is a wish, to be walking distance to as much as possible. I'd heard Niles itself is pricey compared to some other places and doesn't have a "downtown" area. Is this so?

Not particularly pricey, especially in relation to the surrounding areas.

Correct -- there's no downtown Niles.

Nearby areas with a walkable "downtown" area include Park Ridge, Skokie (though downtown Skokie is somewhat of a ghost town and probably will remain so until the Yellow Line CTA station opens) and the Chicago neighborhoods of Edgebrook and Edison Park. FWIW: I'm defining a modest suburban/neighborhood "downtown" as a concentrated commercial area that includes some or all of the following everyday services/stores: grocery store, dry cleaner, library, post office, at least a couple of different restaurants, hardware store, public transportation, etc. We're not talking department stores or high-end shopping.

If you open the radius a little wider, there are downtown areas in most surrounding suburbs, including larger walkable areas in Evanston, Glenview and a few other places. But your housing budget may not fit those last two communities.

Libertyville may be possible, probably Grayslake. Stay out of Round Lake if schools are you high priority. You are wise to want to stay on the MD-N line. It's probably faster than driving, especially during bad weather. As far as getting from Morton Grove station to the office, a car or bicycle could be stationed there. If he is real adventurous he could take a folding bicycle on the train. I would not want to drive from Libertyville or Grayslake to Niles every day.
