Thank you for writing from experience and not based on stereotypes or what you've heard. I had this thread //www.city-data.com/forum/chica...akes-area.html in mind when I made that statement - I wasn't trying to single out you and Steve-o.

Hello there.

You should be able to find something if you look a bit fruther north and west -- lake villa was good suggestion. Traffic is less as you go north and west and you can get more house for less money (generally, not always). You dont have to live in a condo!

Try round lake, grayslake, lake villa, mundelein, and yes I do think some areas of waukegan could be acceptable, and you can move later if you want to or think its best, as your children near school age (if you have them). I would not recommend starting out here in waukegan though....I think you can find a nicer spot that might be a little farther drive to lincolnshire.

keep your eyes peeled for good deal. To me, the great thing about lake county is you have ALL kinds of neighborhoods and homes. You can find old cottages in the country, farms, cookie cutter subdivisions....everything. We have old houses and new houses....you just have to get on the ground drive around and start looking....but the internet helps...

Thank you to everyone who has posted so far. Keep it coming!

The weather won't be too much of a shock....we grew up in New Hampshire and have only been in FL for a year and a half.

We're going up to Lincolnshire next week to meet with some of the people up that way and officially receive our written offers. If we decide to sign we'll get a couple house-hunting trips, so we definitely plan to do a lot of driving around and exploring! Thanks again, everyone!

Smile Also moving from Florida to North Chicago

Hi everyone, I have been reading everything I can about housing and whatnot, as we just discovered we are moving to Great Lakes in July 2008. My husband is Navy, so we are trying to get a feel for the area before we move up there. We would like to buy a house, but since we can't make it up there before we move to look, we are hoping to get into base housing for a year so we can really take the time to get to know the area. So ANY info you can share about Great Lakes, and all the surrounding areas would be great!!
