Hey guys - what are the best beaches to go to in the summer?

I'd love to hear everyone's opinion.

Sadly Chicago tends to have very few options. North Ave is more active, with sports oriented folks hanging out. Oak St. is blessed / burdened by its location on the Gold Coast.

Montrose beach is the only one technically open to people with their dogs. Tends to be a nice crowd if you like the smell of lake water soaked dog (and I do...)

Southside beaches do not attract an integrated crowd, save for those nearest Hyde Park...

IL Beach State Park, Waukegan City beach. Lake Forest is pretty good, but you have to park a few miles away or pay big bucks for a parking permit. There are also plenty of inland beaches, on Round Lake, Fox Lake, Diamond Lake, Bangs Lake and so forth. Chicago has some good beaches too, but rather crowded.

Actually, close in beaches like Burnham (36th st) and 63rd street are clean and pleasant. Burnham has become increasingly Hispanic in recent years but it still very mixed. You can park close in to the beach in both areas.

Farther out there is the beach at 95th street and Whiting, IN beach, two places which are clean and accessible to drivers.

Sure you don't mean 31th St? I seem to recall that did get some attention from the Park District not too long ago -- for a while it was really deserted, and the parking lots had very obvious signs of neglect. If I am not mistaken there's a boat launch south of the 31th St. Beach and then driven steel sheeting all the way down to about 41st before there is any sand...

IL beach... kind of an oxymoron.

Highland Park, Glencoe & Evanston all have BEAUTIFUL beaches. Problem is you have to pay to enter and/or parking restrictions for residents are enforced within walking distance. If you're up for a weekend trip, the beaches on the Michigan side are MAGNIFICENT.

Always liked it, but again, fee for use. If you do web search under the lake front town's park districts they have details.

Uh...rule of thumb. Don't go in Lake Michigan water. It's always cold anyway. Plus, it is massively polluted. They are always closing beaches in Illinois due to health threats. Just go to the Indiana Dunes with your favorite girl and soak up the sun.
