Actually the average commute times for most residents of the middle class and upper middle class far southern suburbs compare and are favorable in many cases to western and northern suburban average commute times of residents. I am talking about Matteson, Olympia Fields, Flossmoor, Homewood, and some of the other ones close to them. All of these suburbs that I just mentioned have there own metra line. More jobs are needed everywhere. There are corporate offices scattered throughout Chicagoland. Many high level executives including several CEO's live in Flossmoor , Olympia Fields, Frankfort, Orland Park, and Palos Park which are the up market areas of the southern suburbs. But, that can be said for any side of chicagoland. Population in these areas that I have mentioned have grown in a healthy way over the past 10 years. Have you been out there lately? Nothing wrong with the areas that I mentioned at all. I would say it has improved from 10 years ago. As someone mentioned before In Matteson's case it is a middle class village and always has been. If anything it now has more upper middle class residents with all the new homes built within the last 5-10 years.

Gonna have to agree here. Most of my neighbors have a very favorable commute time, and for the people I know that live in some of the areas you mentioned, work less than 20 miles/minutes from home.

It's pronounced Mat-tis-son to be correct. I've had a number of sistas correct me on that when I used to do business over there while working in a basically all black office. I was one of their token white guys.

Actually, most peole say Matt'son. Mat-tis-son just sounds foreign and wierd. Most people, whose not from the area pronounce it the "correct" way. If you are from their or the South Burb's you would say it the "incorrect' way....Matt'son or Matt'sun.

Yeah, anyone from the area, or even who has lived there for any length of time, says "Matt-son".

I have heard also, that Matt-i-son IS the correct pronounciation. Wikipedia, that font of information lists it as such and everyone knows Wiki is never wrong. However, I always say Mattson, and so does everyone I know. Then again, some people say Chicahhhgo and some say Chicawwwgo.

My family moved in here (Matteson) in 2006. We love Matteson, the best hardworking neighbors, best library, best school district - 162 for my children, quiet neighborhood - we live opposite Vollmer trails. The only thing missing is more grocery stores.
