aztoga, Go for it. Like Frank Sinatra says: Chicago is my kind of town, Chicago is.... My kind of town. Chicago is. The winters will be hard but you will enjoy the culture of the state more. Arizona seems rather bland to me. Now do not get me wrong Arizona has its benefits. Warm weather, beautiful scenery, and wonderful historic towns. There maybe others. I remember asking my daughter who was 13 at the time. Which city would you like to live in? Chicago, Phoenix, Charlotte.... Her answer: Arizona is too hot. Out of the mouth of babes. Some cities are not a good fit for all people. I chose to settle in the state of North Carolina. I will be relocating to Charlotte, NC next year. Completion for my degree is scheduled for next year. So I want to be in a city that has more opportunities for employment. Sure I know the job market is down. But that does not keep me from being optimistic.

Has anyone done this? Are we crazy for even considering it?

Please keep in mind that while Phoenix might sound wonderful to a Chicagoan right now, and indeed the climate is nice, it ain't all it's cracked up to be. this place has grown way too quickly, the natural hiking and biking areas that attracted us here are now covered with beige McMansions, it is increasingly and painfully superficial, and the air quality is horrible. I call it The Concrete Jungle.

The Chicago-Phoenix-Chicago "boomerang" pattern is more common than you might think, disillusionment being a common reason as to why. Doesn't sound crazy to me -- I like the idea of visiting Arizona, but not so much living there.

Welcome home (hopefully).

It was 60 degrees today. I wore a wool coat, at my desk, inside my office, with the heat on. No really, I did. I'm sure I'll adjust. I just need a bigger coat.
Wool coat? Good God. It's 18 degrees out right now and I was just out there in jeans and a sweatshirt. To each their own I guess.

Yes, the Public Transportation is faster, more comprehensive and used by a wider spectrum of the population. Though Phoenix just got a light rail line and is planning more. It could also stand for Personal Training, which is also good here. Whether you want to get in shape or train for a marathon, there are plenty of good Personal Trainers here to help you.

Well, in AZ, youre almost guaranteed 6 months of 90+ degree weather, and several weeks of 100+ weather, and many days topping 110+ degrees. Its easy to see why 60 degrees feels so cold to them.

I can see anyone preferring anywhere to anywhere on a case by case basis, but it would never, ever have occurred to me to consider it wholesale crazy to prefer Chicago to Phoenix. If anything I would have imagined the opposite. I have to frequently aggressively recruit engineers from around the country (even world) for my business -- one of my huge competitive advantages is how easy it is to lure top-notch 20-somethings to chicago. Put them up downtown for a weekend visit and they never want to leave. There are few places like it.
